I'm not an expert... and I'm more familiar with western blades and fencing styles.Â* I'd rather call myself an enthusiast.

but still I would REALLY LOVE to see your sword

I do know where to get some answers... if you'd like I can take better photographs of the blade and details and email them to the REAL experts.

since it's found here in the Philippines it could be a WWII era sword. these were mostly machine made, mass produced, and simple in design... but still of very good quality.

the hand made and intricately crafted swords were reserved for the higher ranking officers.Â* though some soldiers were known to have brought their much prized family heirloom blades on to the battlefields.

sadly, alot of these WWII weapons were taken to the US by American soldiers at the end of the war.Â* so you consider yourself very lucky in your find.

by the way.. are these the markings found on the sword?...

    Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* arsenal markings on a machine made WWII japanese sword

    Â* Â* Â*... or something like this?...

    Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* possibly file markings? more details can be found on the site on bottom of post

to help you on your research here's a site with a nice selection of japanese weapons:
    Â* Â* Â*http://www.antiqueswords.com/Topic%2...ed_Weapons.htm
you can click on a sword for more detailed pictures of the parts and a brief history of the weapon

I kinda wish I paid more attention to Asian History back in college... sometimes they give you the historical period instead of the year.Â*
and I don't think the weapons are listed according to date.

here's another good site on the japanese sword:
    Â* Â* Â*http://katana.biography.ms/
you can read here more about the history and timeline,
manufacturing process, classification by lenth, and even
the elemental composition of the steel plus other tidbits
    like...

    Â* Â* Â*did you know a japanese sword is only a katana
Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* if it is worn through a sash with the blade facing up?

    I didn't
